Effects of different protein and energy levels of diets on performance, carcass characteristics and some blood parameters of chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) raised in captivity

In this study, chukar partridges were fed starter diets containing four levels of crude protein (CP : 16, 20, 24, 28%) and metabolizable energy (ME : 2600, 2800, 3000, 3200 kcal/kg) from hatch to 8 weeks of age, and were fed grower diets containing four levels of CP (15, 17.5, 20, 22.5%) and ME (2850; 3000, 3130, 3300 kcal/kg) from 9 to 16 weeks of age. Sixteen treatment consisting of four levels of CP and ME in 4 x 4 factorial arrangement were used with fliree replicates of 10 mixed-sex partridges each. Feed and wafer were offered ad libitum, and continuous lighting was provided The group fed starter diet containing 16% CP had significantly (P<0.01) lower live weight gain (LWG) titan the groups fed starter diets containing 20, 24 and 28% CP. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) of the ,group fed starter diet having i6% CP was significantly (P<0.01) higher than the groups fed starter diets containing more CP. The groups fed starter diets containing 3000 and 3200 kcal/kg ME consumed less feed than the groups fed starter diets containing lower ME (P<0.01). In the grower period, the group fed grower diet containing 15 % CP had significantly (P<0.01) higher LWG than the groups fed grower diets containing 17.5 and 20% CP. LWG was not affected by CP and ME levels of diets at the end of experiment The group fed grower diet having 1.7.5% CP consumed less feed than the group fed grower diet containing 22.5% CP (P<0.05). Feed conversion during grower period was best, for these'groups given grower diets having 15 and 22.5% CP (P<0.01). Feed conversion ratio for gîo'wer period was not affected by ME levels of grower diet, but the groups fed grower diets containing 3300 and 3150 kcal/kg ME consumed less feed than the groups fed grower diets containing lower ME (P<0.01). Carcass characteristics of chukar partridges were not affected by CP levels of diet, but the carcass and rump weights of the group fed grower dies having 2850 kcal/kg ME were significantly (PO.05) lower than the groups fed diets having 3150 and 3300 kcal/kg ME (PO.05). Breast weight was lower in group fed grower diet containing 2850 kcal/kg ME (PO.05). Tiie effects of diets ME level on serum total protein, triglycerides, glucose, calcium and phosphorus levels of partridges, have been important.
