The Evaluation of Osteoporosis with Pseudocolor Imaging on Panoramic Radiographs

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate osteoporosis based on mandibular cortical index (MCI) by performing pseudocoloring on panoramic radiographs. Material and Methods: This study was carried out by retrospectively scanning 300 panoramic radiographs in the archive of xxxxxxxx University Faculty of Dentistry, Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. In the panoramic radiographs evaluated within the scope of the study, C1, C2, C3 scores were determined according to MKI, and in the next step, the differences between pseudocoloring and scores were visually examined using ImageJ program. Differences of pixel values corresponding to C1-C2-C3 scores were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test. SPSS v21.0 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA) program was used in the analysis of the data. Test results were evaluated according to p<0.05 significance level. Results: Osteoporotic changes of C1-C2-C3 scores could not be visually distinguished on pseudocolored panoramic images. According to the numerical density values obtained in the histogram analysis, a significant difference was found between C1-C2-C3 scores (p<0.05). C3 has the highest density value, followed by C2 and C1 respectively (C3>C2>C1). Conclusion: Pseudocolored images obtained by using Image J program are not successful in visually distinguishing osteoporotic changes according to MKI on panoramic radiographs, but the differences between scores can be demonstrated numerically by histogram analysis.
