Development of a new PV simulator structure for modelling PV arrays
Current (I) - voltage (V) and power (P) – voltage (V) characteristics of Photovoltaic (PV) systems using solar cell or array depend on weather conditions. In order to test MPP trackers or MPPT algorithms in repeatable laboratory conditions, researchers need equipment that gives a realistic data similar to output characteristic of solar cell or array (PV panel). This equipment is defined as a PV simulator in the literature. In this study, a new PV simulator structure is proposed for modelling PV panels in laboratory environment. The proposed PV simulator basically consists of series connected cascaded modules. The significant feature of the PV simulator is being suitable for increasing the module number easily. Thus the level number of the output voltage increases in the simulator. Due to this feature, I-V curve of the simulator quite resembles the I-V curve of PV panel desired to be modelled. In order to show the performance of the proposed structure, a simulation study was carried out. First, I-V data of a real PV panel was loaded to the simulation program. The necessary switching signals were generated in the simulation program for PV simulator by using an actual I-V data. I-V and P-V curves were obtained for 5 and 6 module condition and results were compared to the curves of the sample PV panel. I-V and P-V curves were also obtained for different solar irradiance values and partial shaded conditions. By increase of the module number I-V and P-V curves of the PV simulator and sample PV panel quite resemble each other. The proposed structure is suitable for operating as a PV simulator. Both the simulator has a modular structure and the results are considered, it is seen that the proposed simulator is convenient for using at high voltage and power applications.
