THE EFFECT OF R&D EXPENDITURES ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE SAMPLE OF OECD COUNTRIES

In this study, we attempt to determine the effect of R&D expenditures on economic growth in 35 OECD countries. For this purpose, we examine the data for the period 2000 – 2020 employing static panel data models. Empirical findings obtained from the analyzes using fixed effect and random effect models show that R&D expenditures positively affect economic growth in our sample of countries for the period under consideration. However, the decision to increase R&D expenditures is ultimately a complex policy question, and it should not be forgotten that the relationship between R&D expenditures and economic growth is influenced by many factors such as the quality of institutions, the level of human capital, and the effectiveness of innovation policies. Indeed, in some cases, R&D expenditures may not be the most effective way to boost economic growth.
