Internalized Stigma in Alcohol Dependence: Association with Depression

The internalized stigma and depressivesymptoms in alcohol dependency could havenegative impacts on patient’s social andoccupational life and treatment processes. Themain aims of this research are to examine therelation between internalized stigma anddepression and to determine the effects ofdemographic and clinical variables oninternalized stigma in alcohol dependency.Patients who attended the study were receivingoutpatient and inpatient alcohol dependencytreatment. In this research demographic- clinicdata form, Internalized Stigma of Mental IllnessScale (ISMI) and Beck Depression Inventorywere used. Results indicated that internalizedstigma was positively related to depression. Inaddition, depression and outpatient treatment,low educational level and unemployment werefound as the risk factors for internalizedstigma. Findings regarding the relationbetween internalized stigma and depressionwere discussed in reference to existingliterature.
