Recent developments in flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels

Kandlikar (2002a) published an article outlining the fundamental issues related to flow boiling in microchannels. These issues are revisited in the current paper. The flow boiling in microchannels is an area of intense research due to its extremely high thermal performance capability. One of the major hurdles in its practical implementation is posed by the instabilities arising due to bubble nucleation and its rapid growth. This paper presents a review of the efforts on stabilizing the flow and establishing the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics during flow boiling in microchannels. The models describing heat transfer and critical heat flux are expected to follow after reliable experimental data have been obtained under stable boiling conditions.
