Prognostic value of cyclin D3 expression in Wilms tumour :A retrospective immunohistochemical study

The D type cyclins are positive regulators of the G1 phase of cell cycle. Only a few data is available on prognostic significance of cyclin D3 (a probable protooncogene) in malignant tumours. We undertook this study to search for the prognostic significance of immunohistochemical expression of cyclin D3 in Wilms' tumour. Monoclonal antibody specific for cyclin D3 was applied immunohistochemically by labelled streptavidin - biotin peroxidase method in formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections of Wilms' tumour in 30 children between 1-10 years of age in different stages of disease. Twenty-two of the cases are alive. Cyclin D3 was positive in 13 cases and negative in 17 cases. The mean survival time was 99 months for cyclin D3 negative cases, while 40 months for cyclin D3 positive cases. Survival analysis showed a significant difference between cyclin D3 positive and negative cases (p< 0.01). Prognosis is worse in cyclin D3 positive cases. Our results indicate that it would be worth studying the prognostic importance of cyclin and other regulatory protein expressions in Wilms' tumour and other tumours.
