Evaluation of Skills of High School Students in Interpreting Daily Life Events İn Lighth of The Knowledge They Learn in Their Physics Lessons

This research has been conducted in order to reveal to what extent the high schoolstudents are able to apply the knowledge they obtained in science-physics courses wheninterpreting the nature phenomena they encounter in daily life. It is intended that the obtainedresults contribute to enhancement of the teaching methods.The aim of this research is to find out what extent students could relate the fluxconcept to nature phenomena like seasons and illumination. A similar research was conductedwith graduates in physics of Harvard University. The mentioned research has been a referencewhen this research was conducted. The previous research has shown that the students couldnot relate the flux concept to phenomena like illumination and how seasons come into being.Two classical questions were prepared concerning the illumination and origin ofseasons. A total of 99 high school students were asked these questions (35 students from ascience high school and 64 students from a super high school). The answers were evaluatedone by one. By being put into categories, the opinions and views were classified as conceptualthoughts. Under the light of this classification, it was tried to identify misconceptions andtheir origins. Suggestions were developed according to the results.Key Words : Flux, seasons, illumination
