Views of Fourth and Fifth Grade Pupils about Social Studies Course

It is known that one of the functions of school is to provide socialization of individual,awareness of his/her culture, history and institutions. Another function of the school is toteach children opportunities that the society provides and how to use these opportunitiesappropriately. One of the aims of social studies program is to prepare stage one students ofbasic schools to society’s life.This study aimed to determine views of stage one students in relation to social studiescourse. Study’s population was fourth and fifth grade students from different suburbs ofIstanbul.Study’s questionnaire was prepared by the teaching staff from Primary Social Studieseducation program in Ataturk Faculty of Education/Marmara University through interviewswith fourth and fifth grade primary students.We think that this study will provide some suggestions for effective social studiesteaching, in which the social studies course is usually presumed as a memorizing schoolsubject, in order that the students who are between concrete and abstract learning levels maydevelop positive thoughts.Key words : Socialization of Individual, Social Studies Education Program, SocialStudies Teaching, Stage One Students of Basic Education
