Fâiz Keynes’in General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money (İstihdam, Fâiz ve Paranın Genel Teorisi – 1936) kitabında olduğu gibi, Keynes öncesi çok sayıda eserde de isim veren bir role sahiptir. Eugen Böhm-Bawerk’in Capital and Interest’i (Sermaye ve Fâiz – 1889), Knut Wicksell’in Interest and Prices’ı (Fâiz ve Fiyatlar – 1898), ve Gustav Cassel’in The Nature and Necessity of Interest’i (Fâizin Doğası ve Gerekliliği – 1903) hemen akla gelen eserlerdir. F. A. Hayek’in Prices, Interest and Investment’indeki (Fiyatlar, Fâiz ve Yatırım – 1939) makaleler, Keynes’in kitabından önce ve sonra yayınlanan, fâiz oranlarının üretim planlarının tüketim tercihleri ile koordine edilişinde oynadığı kritik role odaklanır. Genel Teori klâsik (ve Avusturyacı) düşünceden fâizin esere isim verici rolünün haricinde önemli bir kopuşunu temsil eder. Daha doğrusu, bu kopuş Keynesyen teoride piyasaca belirlenen fâiz oranı tarafından oynanan rolün dengesizleştirici olmasından kaynaklanır.
