Diğer yorumcular ise bunun aksini iddia ederek, Mill'in teorisinin hâlâ faydacı olduğunu ileri sürerler. Bu makale, Mill'in söz konusu niteliksel ayrımının nihayetinde niceliğe indirgenebilir bir tasnif olduğunu, dolayısıyla Mill'in ahlak teorisinin hâlâ faydacı olduğu iddiasını gerekçelendirir

SATISFIED FOOL OR DISSATISFIED SOCRATES:THE UTILITARIAN CHARACTERISTICS AND THE DISTINCTIONBETWEEN THE PLEASURES OFJOHN STUART MILL'S ETHICS

Utilitarianism, founded by Jeremy Bentham, is the theory of ethics. The principle of utility which states that the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people is the basis of this theory. Decisions about the moral rightness of the actions are made on the basis of the suitability of the principle of utility. The happiness which is presented as the aim of this theory, is the existence of pleasure and the absence of pain. The pleasure is the basic notion of the theory and there is a conflict on pleasure between Bentham and Mill who are the most important philosophers of the utilitarian tradition. Accordingly, while Bentham says that a quantitative distinction must be made between pleasures only, Mill says that in addition to the quantitative distinction, a qualitative one must be made between pleasures and he distinguishes the pleasures as the higher pleasures and the lower pleasures. Mill's approach arises a question about on which basis the pleasures divide as higher and lower. On this basis some commentators argue that Mill's ethical theory cannot be evaluated within the utilitarian and hedonistic tradition and they accuse him of being inconsistent. Contrary to this approach, other commentators argue that Mill's ethical theory is still utilitarian. This articles argue that Mill's qualitative distinction on pleasures is ultimately based on quantitative distinction so that Mill's ethical theory is still utilitarian
