Creation and the incarnation in Athanasius ' s doctrine of salvation

As the champion of Nicene-orthodoxy and the stauncest enemy of Arianism, Athanasius of Alexandria is definitely the most important theologian of the fourth century. In his De incarnatione verbi dei, he reconsturcts his doctrine of salvation in the context of creation and the incarnation. His soteriology places the incarnation at the center of Christian salvation. According to Athanasius, God could only complete his goals in creating humanity through the incarnation. It is essential for Athanasius that both events are accomplished through the same divine agent: the Logos of God. This paper explicates various connections made by Athanasius between these two cardinal events of salvation history and thus presents a thorough picture of his soteriology.
