CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH’IN ÇALIŞMALARINDA KANT’IN YÜCE, DOĞA, SENSUS COMMUNİS VE DEHA KAVRAMLARININ İZİNİ ARAMAK

TRACING KANT’S CONCEPTION OF SUBLIME, NATURE, SENSUS COMMUNIS, AND GENIUS IN WORKS OF CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH

With this study, I aim to expose how Kant’s aestethics expresses itself in artistic works, especially in Caspar David Friedrich’s works, by considering the aesthetics-art relationship. To fullfill such an aim, first of all, I will focus on explaining the positions of the concepts of ‘sublime’, ‘nature’, ‘sensus communis’ and ‘genius’ in Kantian aesthetics. In order to narrate how Caspar David Friedrich places nature within his art, I will show some examples from his works of art. Once the relationship between Kantian aesthetics and Caspar David Friedrich’s art works is established through featured concepts, I will show and interpret this relationship on axis of the concept of ‘rückenfigur’. Also, I will try to explain, as plainly as possible, whether Caspar David Friedrich is a genius or not, within the context of Kant’s aesthetic thought
