Bu çalışma Eurovision Şarkı Yarışması’nı 50 yılı aşkın geçmişiyle dikkatle incelemeye değer popüler kültür ürünü bir televizyon programı olarak ele almaktadır. Çalışmada Türkiye’nin yakın tarihine damga vurmuş bir yarışma programı aracılığıyla modern Türk kimliğinin çelişkili görünümleri ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Yarışmanın bireysel değil ülkeler düzeyinde bir temsil üzerine kurulu olması, yarışmanın ulusal kamuoyu açısından “milli bilinci uyaran” bir nitelik kazanmasına neden olmuştur. Bu yönüyle yarışma üzerinden yapılan tartışmalar, Cumhuriyet’in ilanıyla yeni bir evreye giren modernleşme süreciyle hedeflenen “yeni Türk kimliği” idealinin pratikte nasıl hayat bulduğunu göstermektedir. Eurovision Şarkı Yarışması ve yarışmaya ilişkin tartışmalarda, modernleşme süreciyle toplumsal yaşamda meydana gelen zihniyet dönüşümünün izleri sürülmeye çalışılmıştır. Ulusal yazılı basında yer alan haberler üzerinden yapılan çözümleme, yarışmanın modernliğe duyulan arzuyu yeniden üretirken aynı zamanda geleneksel kimliğe duyulan özlemi de yeniden ürettiğini ortaya koymuştur.

This study examines Eurovision Song Contest with its over 50 years history as a noteworthy television program of popular culture. The aim of this study is to put forward the contradictory aspects of modern Turkish identity through a song contest that left its mark in the contemporary Turkish history. Those who participate in the contest, compete for the country they represent rather than themselves. In this respect the song contest has a stimulating role on national consciousness. With this aspect, the debates that occur over the Eurovision Song Contest demonstrates how the “new Turkish identity”, targeted by the Turkish Republic, came to life in practice. By looking at the debates that occurred in the Turkish print media about the contest, this study attempts to observe the effects of the modernization process on the Turkish society and the mental transformation that this process created. The analysis that has been made through the national print media indicated that, the contest reproduces the desire for modernity but at the same time it also reproduces the desire for traditional identity
