Tür olarak mektup, tarihsel süreç içerisinde varlığını uzun yıllar sürdürmüş, 19. yüzyıla gelindiğinde dönemin şartlarının getirmiş olduğu sosyal ve siyasal hareketlilikler gereği popülerliğini ve kullanım alanını arttırmıştır. Özellikle biyografi ve otobiyografi çalışmalarında birincil kaynak olarak kullanılan mektup üzerine birtakım bilimsel çalışmalar bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Türk edebiyatının belirli bir dönemine bilimsel bağlamda kaygı ve endişe kavramları doğrultusunda yaklaşan Ahmet Metehan Şahin'in Tanzimat Dönemi Mektuplarında Kaygı ve Endişe başlıklı çalışması değerlendirilmektedir. Bu doğrultuda öncelikle eserin başlık ve alt başlıkları ayrı ayrı incelenerek eser hakkında bilgi verilmektedir. Ardından ele alınan kavramlar çerçevesinde kitapta yeni bakış açıları ile literatüre olan katkısına dikkat çekilmiştir. Daha sonra Şahin'in söz konusu çalışmasının kaygı ve endişe kavramları çerçevesinde dile getirdiği konuların altı çizilmiş ve eserin edebiyat alanındaki boşluğu hangi açılardan doldurduğu aktarılmıştır. Türk edebiyatında mektup türünün kullanım alanı ve bu türün kaygı ve endişe etrafında nasıl kurulduğu gözler önüne serilmiştir. Yazarın bakış açısıyla mektup türüne yeni bir yaklaşımın üzerinde durulmuştur. Böylece eserin Türk edebiyatında mektup türünün kaygı ve endişe bağlamında kuramsal boyutu tespit edilmiştir.

As a genre, the letter has continued its existence for many years in the historical process, and in the 19th century, it increased its popularity and usage area due to the social and political movements brought about by the conditions of the period. There are a number of scientific studies on the letter, which is used as a primary source especially in biography and autobiography studies. In this study, Ahmet Metehan Şahin's work titled Anxiety and Worry in Letters of the Tanzimat Period, which approaches a certain period of Turkish literature in line with the concepts of anxiety and worry in a scientific context, is evaluated. In this direction, firstly, the title and subtitles of the work are examined separately and information about the work is given. Then, within the framework of the concepts discussed in the book, attention is drawn to its contribution to the literature with new perspectives. Afterwards, the issues raised by Şahin's work within the framework of the concepts of anxiety and worry are underlined and it is conveyed in which ways the work fills the gap in the field of literature. The usage area of the letter genre in Turkish literature and how this genre is constructed around anxiety and worry are revealed. A new approach to the letter genre has been emphasized from the author's point of view. Thus, the theoretical dimension of the letter genre in Turkish literature in the context of anxiety and worry has been tried to be determined.
