Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu olarak da isimlendirilen 330-1453 yılları arasında geniş topraklarda hüküm süren Bizans İmparatorluğu, araştırmacıların sıklıkla ilgisini çekmiştir. 20. yüzyılın sonuna kadar bu konuda yapılan araştırmalar, siyasî, idarî ve askerî alanlarda olmuştur. Bizans İmparatorluğu’nun saray kültürü ve sosyal hayatını esas alan çalışmalar eksiklik teşkil etmiştir. 1994 yılında literatürdeki bu eksikliği gidermek amacıyla Dumbarton Oaks’ta uluslararası sempozyum düzenlenmiştir. Dünyanın farklı üniversitelerinden bir araya gelen akademisyenler, Bizans’ın altın çağı olan 829-1204 yılları arasındaki saray kültürüne dair çeşitli sunumlar yapmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Bizans Saray Kültürü 829-1204 isimli kitabın değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Değerlendirilen kitap, Dumbarton Oaks’ta uzun yıllar Bizans çalışmalarını yürüten Henry Maguire editörlüğünde bir araya getirilen Bizans saray kültürüne ilişkin on dört ayrı makaleyi ihtiva etmektedir. Kitapta yer alan makaleler; imparatorluk törenleri, kıyafetleri, saray bahçeleri, imparatorluğun simgesel motifleri, dönemin devletleri ile ilişkiler bağlamında Bizans’ın imparatorluk kültürü gibi çok çeşitli alanlara temas etmektedir. Bizans saray kültürüne ilişkin geniş bir kompozisyon örneği sunan kitap, saray hayatıyla bağlantılı detaylı konulara da temas ettiğinden, kitabın diğer Bizans çalışmalarından ayrı bir yeri bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, yazarların vurguladıkları meseleler, konuya yaklaşımları, meseleler arasındaki bağlamlar, dil ve üslup özellikleri incelenmiştir.

The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, which ruled over large lands between 330 and 1453, has often attracted the attention of researchers. Researches focus on this subject until the end of the 20th century were in the political, administrative and military fields. Studies based on the palace culture and social life of the Byzantine Empire constituted a deficiency. In 1994, an international symposium was held in Dumbarton Oaks in order to fill this gap in the literature. Academicians from different universities of the world made various presentations on the palace culture between 829-1204, the golden age of Byzantium. In this study, the book named “Byzantine Palace Culture 829-1204” was evaluated. The evaluated book contains fourteen separate articles on Byzantine palace culture, compiled under the editor of Henry Maguire, who conducted Byzantine studies at Dumbarton Oaks for many years. Articles in the book; It touches on various areas such as imperial ceremonies, clothes, palace gardens, symbolic motifs of the empire, and the imperial culture of Byzantium in the context of relations with the states of the period. The book, which presents an extensive composition example on Byzantine palace culture, also touches on detailed topics related to palace life, so the book has a separate place from other Byzantine studies. In this study, the issues emphasized by the authors, their approaches to the topic, the contexts between the issues, language and stylistic features were examined.
