Change in Inflammation Markers in Breast Cancer Radiotherapy

INTRODUCTION: Chronic inflammation plays a key role in cancer development and progression. During radiotherapy (RT), acute- phase proteins are produced that induce inflammation and oxidative stress. Two of these proteins are C reactive protein (CRP) and albümin (Alb). In this study we aimed to investigate the relationship of acute phase proteins levels with radiation and other factors during radiotherapy. METHODS: 50 female patients diagnosed with breast cancer were included in our study. Adjuvant RT was applied to all patients. Routine CRP and Alb levels of the patients were evaluated before RT and on the last day of RT. The relationship between the stage of patients, RT areas and acute radiation side effects were evaluated. RESULTS: When CRP and Alb levels were evaluated before and after the treatment, a significant increase was found in CRP and a significant decrease was found in Alb. There was no significant relationship between the stage of the patients and the change in Alb, CRP. However, a significant relationship was found between the CRP change with the addition of supraclavicular and axillary RT. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: As a result it has been shown that radiation therapy causes changes in CRP and Alb levels and these changes depend on multiple factors along with RT.
