Kemençe eskiden beri değişik Türk topluluklarınca kullanılan milli bir çalgı olup, kelimenin bizzat kendisinin de, tıpkı ilgili terimlerin tamamı gibi, Türkçe asıllı olma ihtimali vardır. Türkiye'de Trabzon çevresinde çok kullanıldığı bilinmekle birlikte, bu çalgıya ilgi hızla düşmüştür.

Kemenche is a national instrument used by several Turkic peoples since the ancient times. Etymology of the word possibly goes to Turkic, like all pertinent terms, and not to Persian as widely assumed. Trabzon region is known with popularity of its use; however there is a steady decrease of interest in kemenche.
