Mortellaro disease (Digital dermatitis): General perspective
Digital dermatitis was first reported by Chali and Mortellaro in Italy in 1974 causing lameness in dairy cattle up to 60 %. Although, so far, precise aetiology is stilt unknown, Treponema-like spirochete has been incriminated as a pathogen. Typical lesions are seen at the plantar aspects of the feet, just above the interdigital cleft, under the dew claws. There is a superficial inflammation in the epidermis. In treatment, local application of oxytetracyclines are recommended. This disease is also seen in Turkey (Güzel, Demirkan; unpublished data).
