The Suez Canal as a Geopolitical-Strategic Border for the Buffer State
The opening of the Suez Canal had a profound impact on the geography, economy and politics of the region. It tore apart the geography of the Muslim World between Asia and Africa, and at the same time, it brought Western Europe closer to its colonies in the East. Thus, as much as the Canal divided the Muslims, it brought them much closer to their occupiers. This paper examines the unknown story of the connection between the Suez Canal and the buffer state. As well as how the refusal to create this barrier throughout the Muslim eras; from the rightly guided Caliph to the Abbasids and finally to the Ottomans, was then advanced by colonialist powers linking both projects in their plans for the region. The ideas of creating a buffer state together with isolating and encircling of Muslim power was at the heart of such plans. The creation of the Suez Canal thus represented a geopolitical protection for the security of the buffer state. This paper discusses this issue through presenting historical documentary evidence. The paper adopts a descriptive approach together with analysis and comparison when needed. It concludes with presenting three possible stages of proposed solutions to this predicament.
