The role of Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio in DeterminingCOVID-19 Mortality

Objective: A few diagnostic hematological parameters have been determined in COVID-19 disease. Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was shown as a significant marker in indicating the severity of the disease and mortality in COVID-19 in several studies. We were aimed to determine the use of NLR to distinguish critically ill patients in this study. Material and Methods: A total of 360 patients who were diagnosed COVID-19 and required hospitalization through September 1, 2020–October 1, 2020, in the Ankara Atatürk Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital were included in the study. Results: The mean age of all (n=360), dead (n=42), and alive (n=318) patients included in the study was 62.27±14.09, 69.95±12.48, and 61.25±13.99 years, respectively. The mean age of died patients was higher statistically (p5.688) group had statistically significantly higher C-reactive protein, D-dimer, ferritin, and troponin values, while the need for advanced oxygen therapy and the mortality rate were also higher in this group. Conclusion: NLR has important advantages of being easily calculated from the complete blood count, can be found in all hospitals and resulted shortly. These advantages can help clinicians increase their awareness in the management of their COVID-19 patients.
