Çocuk, tarih boyunca masumiyetin simgesi olmuştur. Çocukluk kavramı ise 16’ncı yüzyılda ortaya çıkmıştır. Önceki dönemlerde çocukluk özel bir dönem olarak görülmez. Sanattaki çocuk imgesinin değişimi, toplumdaki çocukluk kavramının algılanış şeklinin değişimine paralellik gösterir. İsa ve melek ikonları, sanat tarihindeki en bilindik çocuk imgeleridir. Statü sahibi ya da soylu çocuğun tek başına resmin konusu olması ancak 16’ncı yüzyılda gerçekleşebilmiştir. Fakat bunun dışındaki çocuklar ise ancak 19. yy’da resmedilmiştir. Günümüze gelene değin çocuk imgesi birçok eserde masumiyetin simgesi olarak, farklı şekillerde yer almıştır. Postmodernizmin hakim olduğu günümüz sanatında çocuk imgesi, masumiyet/savunmasızlık/hassaslık kavramlarına tezat olarak şüphe/şiddet/tanımsızlık kavramlarının bir araya geldiği huzursuz tasvirlerde görülür. Gottfried Helnwein’in resimlerinde yer alan çocuk imgeleri; rahatsız edici şekilde, şiddet ve masumiyet kavramlarını bir araya getirir. Bu çalışmada, öncelikle çocukluk kavramının gelişimi ve sanatsal yansıması incelenecektir. Sonrasında geleneksel çocuk imgesinden oldukça uzak eserler üreten Gottfried Helnwein’in sanatsal gelişimi ve eserleri incelenecektir. Sanatçının eserleri üzerinden değişen çocuk imgeleri ve anlamları üzerine tartışılacaktır

The image of a child has been a symbol of innocence throughout history. Chilhood concept emerged in 16th century. Before that, childhood was not seen as a special period. The change of children images in the arts, shows parallelism to the change of society’s perception of childhood. Christ and angel icons are the most known children images in art history. The children could become the subject of art in 16th century only if they have a statu or are nobility. The rest is painted in 19th century. By the time present day, image of child mentioned as a symbol of innocence in different ways. In today’s postmodernizm dominated art, the image of a child is seen in disturbing portrays in which innocence/vulnerabilities/tenderness concepts contrasting doubt/violence/undefined come together. Child images in Gottfried Helnwein’s paintings, brings concepts of violence and innocence together in a disturbing way. In this liteary study, the development of the concept of child and it’s artistic reflection will be examined. Then Gottfried Helnwein’s, artictic development and images whose artworks are quite different from the traditional child image Based on the works of the artist, changing images of child and their meanings will be discussed
