Türkiye'de pamuk üretiminin en hızlı geliştiği bölge Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesidir. 1970-1996 yılları arasında bölgede pamuk ekim alanları yaklaşık 7 kat (30 000 hektar'dan 204 252 hektara), üretim bakımından yaklaşık 20 kat (9 540 ton'dan 223 624 ton'a) artmıştır, özellikle GAPm bu bölge sınırları içinde olması ve sulanan alanların proje kapsamında her geçen gün artması, pamuk tarımı bakımından bölgenin önemini arttırmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, bölgede üretim ve ekonomik önemi her geçen gün artan pamuğun, bölge ekonomisine sağladığı ve ileride GAP tamamlandığında sağlayacağı katkı incelenmiştir.

Cotton growing has been rapidly gaining a remarkable importance in Southern Anatolian Region, Turkey. In the years from 1970 to 1996, it was recorded that the cotton growing areas were expanded 7 times (from 30 000 hectares to 204 232 hectares) and the yield increased 20 times (from 9 540 ton to 223 624 ton). Since the GAP is in this region and the increase in irrigatable fields under the extent of the project, the importance of the region has increased as a cotton growing area. In this study, it was conducted a research on the economical importance and the increas of growth areas of cotton which now provides a greate movement for the economical structure of the region and will provide important contribution in the future.
