The necessity of diagnostic tests for the assessment of constipation in childhood

Background: To eliminate the organic diseases in children with constipation, the diagnostic tests are required occasionally in diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the necessity of additional diagnostic tests for the evaluation of children with constipation. Methods: Between January 2002 and November 2003, we reviewed 100 children with chronic constipation who had admitted in our department. The most used diagnostic tests and results, and final diagnosis were noted according to the age. Results: We found that the diagnostic tests were used in 62% of children; the cause of constipation was organic diseases in 11%. The barium enema and rectal biopsy were most practical tests under one year old. The incidence of application of diagnostic tests in the first age was significantly higher than older p
