Comparison of relative renal functions calculated with Tc-99m DMSA and Tc-99m DTPA

The aim of this study was to compare the values of relative renal functions obtained byTc-99m DMSA and Tc-99m DTPA scintigraphy. Methods: 42 patients referred to nuclear medicine department were evaluated with DMSA and DTPA renal scintigraphies. Region of interests were drawn over each kidney. Relative renal functions were calculated by dividing the counts in one kidney by the total counts of the right and left kidneys. Results: There was an excellent correlation (r=0.978) between relative functions calculated with these two different methods. Conclusion: Since there is no difference between relative renal functions calculated with Tc-99m DMSA and Tc-99m DTPA scintigraphies, Tc-99m DMSA scintigraphy, inexpensive and easy to perform, is an appropriate method for calculating relative renal functions.
