Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Objective: Peripheral nerve involvement has been evidenced by a large number of nerve conduction studies in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We evaluated whether a similar involvement exists in central auditory pathways in these patients. Method: we recorded the brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in forty three subjects with COPD of mean age 62.55 + 7,51. Results: Peak latencies of wave I were found to be significantly prolonged in COPD patients while parameters of central transmission time showed no significant difference from those of the controls. Conclusion: Our results seem to suggest that central nervous system remains unaffected by chronic hypoxia.
