Comparison of hematological parameters in patients with transient ischemic attack and acute ischemic stroke

Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the changes of hematologic parameters and compare these changes in patients with transient ischemic attack (TİA) and acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods: Neurologic and laboratory assessment of patients applying with the symptoms of acute cerebral ischemia to the emergency department was performed. Ninety four patients with AIS and seventy patients with TIA who became definite diagnosis, was included to the study. The cases without neurological symptoms and signs but with different complaints who have comparable age and sex were accepted as control group. The blood sample was taken in all patients who applied in 72 hours after the beginning of the symptoms of cerebral ischemia. The blood sample was analyzed and the value of white blood cell (WBC), thrombocyte, fibrinogen, sedimentation determined and these parameters were compared between groups. Results: The platelet number was found higher in TIA and AIS groups than control group (p<0,001). The fibrinogen value, white blood cell number and value of sedimentation was higher in patient with AIS than both TIA and control groups (p<0,001). Conclusion: This study results support that some hematological parameters such as WBC fibrinogen and sedimentation could be an indicator of acute cerebral ischemia although it is not specific.
