Amaç: Demir eksikliği anemisinde eritrositlerde oksidatif stresi araştırmak amaçlandı. Yöntem: Demir eksikliği anemisi tanısı konulan 35 hasta ile aynı yaş grubunda 34 sağlıklı kontrolda eritrosit lipid peroksidasyonu, redükte glutatyon konsantrasyonu, eritrosit katalaz aktivitesi ölçüldü. Oxidative stress in erythrocytes of patients with iron deficiency anemia

Objective: It was aimed to investigate oxidative stress in erythrocytes of patients with iron deficiency anemia. Methods: Erythrocyte lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione concentrationand catalase activity were measured in 35 patients with iron deficiency anemia and 34 healthy controls. Statistical analyzes were performed using Student&#8217;s t and correlation analysis. Results: Erythrocyte lipid peroxidation was significantly higher (p<0.05) but reduced glutathione concentration and catalase activity were lower (p<0.05) in patients with iron deficiency anemia than those of controls. There was a significant correlation between serum iron concentration and erythrocyte catalase activity (r=0.651, p<0.01). Conclusion: Erythrocytic catalase enzyme needs iron which is cofactor for its activity. Iron deficiency may be responsible for decreased erythrocytic catalase activity. In conclusion,the decreasing of erythrocytic antioxidative defense mechanisms and the increasing of peroxidation products led to structural andfunctional impairment of erythrocytes.
