Comparative Studies On The Red Cotton Bug, Dysdercus Cingukitus Fabr. And Its Predator Arctiiochus Cocquberti Fabr. (Heteroptera : Pyrrhocoridae)

Feeding behaviour and biology of the red cotton bug, Dysdercus cfngulatus Fab. and its predator, Amtilochus cocquebertii Fabr. was stu¬died under laboratory conditions at a temperature 30°C and 70% rela¬tive humidity. This is the first'time that A. cocquebertii has been reared under laboratory, conditions. The nymphs and adults of A. cocquebertii feed on the eggs, nymphs and adults of D. dngulatus. A number of other insect species offered as food were not accepted even by starved pre¬dators. A. cocquebertii therefore, was found a specific predator of D. cingulatus. The nymphal duration and adult longivity was found to be longer in A. cocquebertii tham its prey D. cj^gulatus. The number of egg batc¬hes produced by a single female Of A. cocquefeertit were much more than1 that laid by D. cingulatus. Both the predator and its prey could tole¬rate low temperaure (16°C). A table showing comparative study on. the developmental stages of. the, two species is given.
