Theories of limit equilibrium methods

In the past 30 years great progress has been made in the area of slope stability. The widespread availability of microcomputers has brought about significant change in the computational aspects of slope stability analysis. Analyses can be done much more thoroughly and more accurately than before. An assessment of the stability of a slope is very important when a judgement is needed as to whether the slope is stable or not, and as a consequence decisions are to be made. There are many different methods of stability analysis available and the procedures are broadly similar in concept. In this study, the most widely accepted limit equilibrium methods of analysis which are commonly used for assessing the stability of slopes are described and the theoretical basis for this class of methods is given. It is very important to understand the theoretical background of a particular method before applying it in practice.
