Reliability-based preliminary design of rubble mound breakwaters

The reliability-based risk assessment and structural design model (REBAD) [1] introduced in coastal engineering, is a worthwhile tool in the preliminary design of coastal structures which are portrayed by vast failure consequences and significant resource expenditures. The reliability-based design sub-model is implemented to Finike Yacht Harbor project which is constructed near the coastal city of Finike located on the Mediterranean Sea, south of Türkiye. Finike yacht harbor construction project is a public investment administrated by the Ministry of Transportation. The results of reliability-based model which utilizes the failure functions of Van der Meer, are compared with the deterministic design approach and hydraulic model tests. The implementation of model to the design of rubble-mound breakwaters has an utmost importance especially in countries such as Turkey, where the use of natural stone for breakwaters is very common due to its economy.
