A bacteriological and mycological survey on feed ingredients and mixed feed in Elaziğ province
The current study was undertaken to determine the microbiological flora of 204 feed ingredient samples and 148 mixed feed samples (harvest- storage - feeding chain) obtained from feed plants, feed stores and feeding troughs in Elazığ province. Moisture level, bacterial and mould counts in samples taken from feed stores were statistically higher acording to feed samples taken from production or harvesting facilities. While, the highest bacterial and mould counts were in corn and molasses samples, the lowest counts were in vitamin and mineral premixes samples packed. Bacterial and mould counts markedly increased in mixed feed taken from feeding troughs, stores and feed production facilities, respectively. However, the increasing of bacterial and mould counts were statistically significant in samples taken from production places than in samples taken from feed stores. The same effect was not determined in samples taken from feedin troughs acording to samples taken from feed stores. There was not significant difference between samples laken from feed stores and feeding troughs in feedlot and chick feeds for bacterial and mould counts. Percent of positivity for various microorganism in highly contaminated samples were as follows ; E. coli 72.72 % , bacillus spp 100%, streptococcus spp. 63.63 %, micrococcus spp. 60.60 %, diplococcus spp. 48.48 %, klebsiella spp. 42.42 %, Coagulase negative staphiiococcus 42.42 %, pseudomonas spp. 9.09 %, proteus spp. 36.36 %,E. aglomerans 21.21%. No salmonella spp. was detected in feed. The percentages for moulds in the same samples were as fallows : Aspergillus spp. 65.62 %, penicillium spp. 40.62 %, fusarium spp. 56.25 %, rhizopus spp. 50.00%.
