Adjoint flux calculations by the finite element method
It is widely known that the finite element method (FEM) is applied as an efficient numerical technique in many area of science and engineering. This method has also been applied to the neutron diffusion theory and group neutron fluxes are calculated by solving multigroup diffusion equations utilizing FEM. On the other hand, perturbation theory applications and some numerical solution techniques (e.g. diffusion synthetic acceleration) requires not only the evaluation of the neutron flux but also the evaluation of the adjoint neutron flux. In this work, we developed a finite element formulation and implemented it in a computer program which is capable of calculating both the neutron flux and its adjoint. In the FEM formulation a Galerkin type weighed residual principle is employed in stead of the classical variational principle. By comparison with analytical solutions, the validity of the developed program is tested and verified. Adjoint flux calculations of the TRIGA MARK II research reactor of ITU is also carried out by means of the developed program.
