Bu araştırmanın amacı, Hırvatistan'ın milli sembolü olan satranç tahtası sembolünün semiyolojik açıdan incelemesini yapmaktır. Araştırmada genel tarama modeli ve nitel yöntemlerden görüşme tekniğinden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Hırvatistan'ın Osijek Devlet Arşivindeki kaynakların incelenmesi ve Hırvatistan'ın Osijek kentinde yaşayan Hırvat Vatandaşlar ve Hırvatların Dünyaca ünlü grafik tasarımcısı Boris Ljubičić yapılan görüşmelerden elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre bayrakta kullanılan satranç tahtası sembolü: bir görüşe göre Kral Drzislav'ın bir satranç oyunundan zaferle ayrılması ve kurtuluşunu sağlamasından dolayı; bir diğer görüşe göre Hırvat milli sembolünün satranç tahtası olarak belirlenmesi, birebir gerçek bir satranç düellosundan ziyade, ortaçağdaki taht ve iktidar kavgaları göz önüne alındığında, bu zorlu zaman aralığını kendi lehine çevirmeyi bilen Hırvatların soyut olarak benimsediği bir simge olmasındandır. Ayrıca bir görüşe göre de; hanedanlık döneminde kırmızı ve beyaz kareler savaş alanını temsil ediyordu. Kırmızı kareler mücadele ve kanı, beyaz veya gümüş kareler ise zaferi ve kazanmayı ifade etmektedir. Neyi sembolize ettiği ve niçin kullanıldığıyla ilgili farklı görüşler olsa da, Hırvatistan'ın stranç tahtası, geçmişten günümüze kadar Hırvatların hem armalarında hem de bayraklarında kullanmaktan vazgeçemedikleri milli sembolleri olmuştur.

The purpose of this research is to investigate chessboard which is Croatia's national symbol is review terms of semiology. Interview technique and qualitative methods were used in the survey. Data set was gathered from the archives in Osijek City, Croatian citizens and interviews made with world-renowned Croatian graphic designer Boris Ljubicic who is living in Osijek. All data was obtained from archives and interviews. Depending on the findings about flag symbol of the chessboard: According to a view, King Drzislav won a chess game duel, and owing to this victory he earned his liberation due to provision of chessgame he pick the chessboard as a symbol of Croats. According to another view, considering the challenging time interval, chessboard was decided as a Croatian national symbol since it symbolizes real throne and power struggles in the middle ages rather than a chess duel and it is an abstract icon for Croats turned the struggles for throne in their favour and adopted it. In addition, according to another opinion; dynastic period the red and white squares were representing the battlefield. Struggle and blood were represented by red squares, the victory and the wining were represented by white or silver color squares. Even though, there are so many different opinions about how and why are Croats using the symbol of chessboard as their national identity symbol, there is something definitely obvious, that chessboard symbol is indispensible for Croatians on their flag and their national identity.
