SHUSTERMAN PHILSOPHER OF SOMAESTHETICS: Somaesthetics As A Way Of Knowing Oneself

Richard Shusterman is the most important representative of pragmatic esthetic today and presents “somaesthetics” to philosophic field as a new discipline. According to him, the role of body in esthetic experience has always been ignored throughout the history of esthetic. However, our body lies in the base of all our esthetic perceptions and admirations. If “knowing oneself” is one of the cognitive aims of philosophy, physical dimension of knowledge cannot be denied. Since the activities we perform while committing an ethical action are carried out by the body, the physical dimension of ethics cannot be denied. Somaesthetics helps us to identify our possibilities as a human and to realize what we want through these possibilities by ensuring an effective willpower is obtained through the discipline of our physical experiences.
