Quine, Naturalized Epistemology and the Normative Aspect of Epistemology

Jaegwon Kim and Alvin Goldman have recently argued that what is most distinctive about Quine's naturalized epistemology, and for that matter what is also most disputable about it, is that it implausibly purports to give up the normative component of epistemology. In this paper, we contend that this criticism is mistaken. So contrary to their opinion, we want to indicate that naturalized epistemology utilizes general norms of inquiry based on a priori justification. In brief, the normative component of epistemology is, for Quine, concerned with the process of "thinking up" of theories.
