Aile toplumsal örgütlenmenin ve toplumsal kurumlaşmanın temel işlevsel bir öğesi ve çekirdeğidir. Birçok toplumsal kurum gibi aile de insanlık tarihi boyunca önemli değişiklikler geçirmiş işlevlerinde farklılaşmalar olmuş, ancak hiçbir toplumda yerini, önemini ve değerini yitirmemiştir. Bu makalenin amacı, toplumsal bir kurum olarak ailenin işlevlerini sosyolojik bir bakış açısıyla belirlemek, toplumdaki önemini vurgulamaktır. Bu çalışmada konu ile ilgili kitap makale gibi sosyolojik literatür ile araştırma raporları taranmış elde edilen bilgilerle ailenin işlevleri belirlenmeye çalışılmış ve elde edilen verilere dayanarak ailenin işlevleri;1)biyolojik işlev, 2)psikolojik işlev, 3) eğitim işlevi, 4)toplumsal işlev, 5) kültürel işlev, 6)ekonomik işlev olmak üzere altı temel başlık altında tespit edilerek incelenmiştir. Araştırma, geçmişte ve halen devam eden ailenin işlevlerini belge veya doküman taramasıyla belirleyen belgesel tarama modelinde betimsel bir çalışmadır. Family is a basically functional component and the core of social organization and social institution. Like many social institution, family also has had many important alterations and changes on its functions, even though it has never lost its place, importance and value on the society. The purpose of this article is to define the functions of family as a social institution within a sociological point of view and emphasize its importance on the society. In this study, the functions of family is categorized by the information which is concluded from the sociological literature such as books and articles about the subject and research reports and they are examined in these 6 categories; 1) Biological function 2) Psychological function 3) Educational function 4) Social function 5) Cultural Function 6) Economical Function . This study is a descriptive study with document-scanning model, which is determining the functions of family in past and present by scanning the documents and literature.
