THE EFFECT OF MASSAGE ON GROWTH DEVELOPMENT OF PREMATURE INFANTS AND BABIES WITH LOW BIRTH WEIGHT

Objective: The study has been planned as semi-experimental for the purpose of measuring the effect of massage applied by mothers on growth development of premature infants and babies with low birth weight LBW . Metods: 30 15 control, 15 experiment premature and LBW babies have constituted the sampling. The babies included in the sampling; are the babies which were born on the 34-36 gestation week, of which the birth weights were between 1800-2500 gr, which were discharged upon the doctor controls made within 15-35 days from birth with the decision of being healthy and in suitable condition to be massaged, which are fed by mother milk, with Apgar Score 1.min 5 or above. The mothers of the babies included in the sampling; are the women who are at least elementary school graduates who do not possess any metabolic or chronic diseases. The collected data are analyzed with Ki-square and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: While a statistically meaningful difference is present between the average weight gains and average mental development points of trial group babies and control group babies p0.05 . Conclusion: The massage applied by the mothers has a positive contribution on growth developments of premature and LBW babies
