Interproximal Enamel Reduction In Orthodontics

Interproximal enamel reduction (stripping) is a procedure to remove the interproximal enamel and anatomically reshape the permanent teeth without damaging. It is applied for the alignment of teeth and the long term retention of the treatment results. It is an alternative method for mild and moderate crowding cases. However, it causes an irreversible tissue loss, a carefull evaluation should be made. It is firstly described by Ballard in 1944 as a conservative method for the treatment of mild and moderate crowding cases. Interproximal enamel reduction is a procedure which imitates the proximal physiological tooth attrition in primitive populations. Today, interproximal enamel reduction has become an alternative method to extraction of permanent teeth and can be used in cases having mild to moderate crowding, in cases having Bolton analysis discrepancies, for the correction of tooth shape anomalies, to increase the stability after treatment; for the correction of gingival contour, the black triangular interdental spaces and curve of Spee. The aim of this review is to introduce interproximal enamel reduction techniques and materials, to provide information about the indications and contraindications and to give clinical suggestions.
