Age Estimation Methods Using Teeth in Forensic Odontology

Age determination is a very important issue in forensic sciences, anthropology and dentistry. Today, the most commonly used techniques for age determination are methods of evaluating dental and bone development. One of the most reliable methods for estimating age of living individuals and corpses is age determination using teeth. It provides valuable information to the researcher because of the hard structural features of the teeth in the remains of the body, their high resistance to mechanical, chemical and physical effects and time, and their ability to preserve their morphological structures for a very long time. Age determination from teeth is done in 2 different periods. In children, the developmental stages and eruption time of temporary and permanent teeth are assessed. In adults, morphological and biochemical changes that occur in permanent teeth are examined. The purpose of this study is to review the methods used for age estimate from teeth and is to evaluate especially of radiographic methods.
