Angiomatoid (Malignant) fibrous histiocytoma: Case report

We present a case of angiomatoid (malignant) fibrous histiocytoma of the skin and subcutaneous tissue on the right thigh of a 17-year-old man. The mass appeared clinically as a subcutaneous nodule with history of rapid growth within two months. Microscopically, there were a unique formation of blood-filled tissue spaces and proliferation of histiocyte-like and fibroblast-like cells in a capillary-rich stroma. Immunohistochemically the tumor cells were immunoreactive for vimentin, CD68, and CD34 and were negative for factor VIII-related antigen, desmin, smooth muscle actin, and S-100 protein. The importance of distinguishing this lesion from metastatic malignancies of lymph node and some subcutaneous malignancies of mesenchymal origin is emphasized.
