Histological Changes in Liver Tissues of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus Exposed to Cadmium in the Presence of Green Algae Cladophora glomerata

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), was exposed to sublethal concentrations (0.1 mg/l and 1 mg/l) of cadmium (cd) in the presence or absence of Cladophora glomerata (L) Kutz (Chlorophyta). At the end of 15 and 30 days periods, Oreochromis niloticus samples were dissected and their livers were collected. Then, the livers were histologically investigated. Histopatological changes occurred in the livers at different concentrations of Cd were studied by light microscope. After Cd application, changes such as dilatation in the sinusoidal region of liver tissue, congestion in blood vessels and sinusoids, hypertrophy in hepatocytes, accumulation of hyaline droplets, degeneration of parenchyma and lipid vacuoiation were observed. Furthermore, subcapsular and dispersed focal necrosis were also encountered. Lesion intensity in the livers increased depending on increased Cd concentration and time.
