Etnisite Kuramları ve Eleştirisi

Etnisite olgusu, güncel ve çelişkili bir biçimde, moderniteyle birlikte daha çok fark edilmeye başlanan siyasal sorunların kilit kavramlarından birisidir. Etnik kimlikler duygusal öğelerle beslendiği için çatışan ya da çatışma potansiyeli taşıyan etnik olguları bilimsel bir yaklaşımla ele almak sosyal bilimlerin yöntemsel sorunlarının çok daha yoğun olduğu bir alanı oluşturmaktadır. Etnisite olgusuyla ilgili tarihsel ve kuramsal çerçevenin açıklığı ve bu alandaki kuramların karşılaştırmalı ve eleştirel değerlendirilmesi etnik sorunlar konusunda anlayıcı, açıklayıcı ve çözüm öngören yaklaşımlara olanak verecektir. Çalışmamızda öncelikle, Antikite ‘den yirminci yüzyıl sonlarına kadar olan uzun bir dönemde etnik, etnik grup, etnisite ve bu kavramlarla bağlantılı kullanımların ortaya çıkış ve değişimleri konusunda genel bir çerçeve çizilmeye çalışılmıştır. Daha sonra bu alandaki başlıca kuramların temel varsayımları üzerinde durulmuş ve son olarak söz konusu kuramların eleştirel bir değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Çalışmamızda, hem moderniteyle ilişkisi belirgin olan devlet, siyasi iktidar ve ekonomik yapı ile bağlantılı hem de etnisitenin değişik boyutlarını ele alan kuramların seçilmesine çalışılmıştır.

Theories of Ethnicity and a Critical Appraisal

Ethnicity is one of the key contemporary concepts that is being realized more with the controversial impacts of modernity. Since ethnic identities have strong emotional characters, studying conflicting or conflict prone ethnic phenomena takes place in one of the most problematic study areas where methods of social sciences encounter intense dilemmas. Clarifying historical and theoretical backgrounds concerning phenomena of ethnicity and evaluating theories of ethnicity in a comparative and critical manner would provide us descriptive, explanatory and solution producing approaches in dealing with ethnic problems. In our study, it was first tried to draw a general frame concerning births and transitions ofterms ethnic, ethnic group, ethnicity, and related terms, covering a wide range of time-span from Antiquity to the end of 20th century. Then, main assumptions of important theories in this field have been evaluated in a critical way. Although there is a huge literature on theories of ethnicity, we have selected those theories which are inner-connected with state, political power and economic structure via modernity and those which would help us figure out various dimensions of ethnicity.
