Comparison of clinicopathologic features of young and older patients with sporadic colorectal adenocarcinoma

Aim. There is still considerable controversy and debate regarding the features of colorectal cancerin young and older patients. In the present study, the influence of age on clinicopathologicalcharacteristics of sporadic colorectal cancer is analyzed retrospectively. Method. A total of 170cases of colectomy for adenocarcinoma in Kocaeli University Medical School, Turkey,Department of Surgery between January 2001 and September 2005 were studied. Results. Of the170 patients, 40 (23.5%) were in the ≤50 age group and 130 (76.5%) in the >50 age group wereincluded in the study. Statistical tests were applied for the variables. No differences were foundbetween the young and older patients in respect of clinical features, histopathological features, surgical procedures, or post-operative complications. Conclusion. According to this study, thereare no differences between young and older patients with sporadic colorectal adenocarcinoma inrespect of clinical features, histopathological features, surgical procedures, or post-operativecomplications. The differences found previously as recorded in the literature may be associatedwith genetic variations.
