The evaluation of foreign body aspiration in childhood
Aim: Foreign body aspirations are frequently seen in children and can sometimes lead even to death. In this study the clinical spectrum and results of airway foreign body aspiration were investigated. Methods: Thirty-two patients with the diagnosis of foreign body aspiration between August 2000 - July 2002 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Fifty-nine percent of the patients were male and 41 % were female, and 84 % of the patients were under the age of 3 years. The education level of the mothers were above high school in 38 % of the patients. Most common symptoms on admission were cough, cyanosis, dsypnea, wheezing, vomiting and fever respectively. Most common foreign bodies were dried fruits (63 %) and other foods (25 %). The location of the foreign bodies in the right and left main bronchi, trachea, larynx, and both bronchi were 48, 33, 5, 9, 5 percent, respectively. Sixty-six percent of the patients were admitted within the first 24 hours following the aspiration and 34 % of the patients were admitted after the first 24 hours. There was significant differences in fever, and dyspnea symptoms, and radiographic findings between the early and late admitted patients (p<0.05). Conclusion: Foreign body aspiration in children is a preventable accident with a high risk of mortality and morbidity which is frequently seen in our country. With improvement in education the incidence and mortality of foreign body aspiration will decrease.
