A Different Overview of the Medical Nutritional Therapy of Diabetes Mellitus: Glycemic Index or Glycemic Load, Which is More Effective in the Planning of the Dietary Therapy?

Modern life has changed individuals dietary habits and causes to rely more on the consumption of high starchy (carbohydrate) foods leading to increased risk of chronic diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus. The highest impact factor in the dietary intake of carbohydrates is glycemic control. Many studies conducted on diabetic subjects showed that low glycemic index diets are effective for short term of glycemic control. Recent studies, on the other hand, suggest that glycemic load should also be evaluated along with glycemic index. Some studies put forward positive impacts of glycemic index on diabetes mellitus while some others emphasise the need to consider glycemic load as well. Within the scope of all this data, it is concluded that more studies are needed to further elaborate on the relation between glycemic index, glycemic load and diabetes mellitus.
