Effects of The Turkish Banking Sector Developments on Growth

This study researches the relationships between economic growth and financial development, bank efficiency, credits and deposits which can be assumed as the most important indicators of banking sector. First efficiency is measured with intermediation and profitability perspective, then relationships between growth and these indicators are analyzed. Considering 2003-2016 period, it can be seen that efficiency in banking increased until 2010 and then it started to deteriorate. Cointegration and causality analysis indicates that efficiency has no effect on growth, however, depending on the selected indicator, the effects on financial development are effective. Although a positive relationship between credits and growth is witnessed, the causality is not from credits towards growth; a one-way causality is detected from growth to credits. Experiences in developed economies prove that credits, as an economic policy tool, should be used with more cautiously.
