Analysis of errors resulting from the conjugation of verbs among learners in preparatory French class
The conjugation of verbs in French expressing a process poses a great problem, at least for learners whose first language acquired differs greatly from the one they are learning. French - the target language for Turkish learners - is a language whose structure and family are entirely different from those of the source language, Turkish, which creates an almost insurmountable difficulty for learners in learning the conjugation of verbs. Indeed, verbs in French appear in different forms depending on the group to which they belong and the subject to which they belong. In the first group, there are regular verbs that end in -er (except the verb go) and this group represents almost 90% of verbs in French. The second group, whose conjugation is still regular, involves verbs that end in -ir and the third group consists of irregular verbs that end in -re, -oir, -ir, and -er. Since the vast majority of irregular verbs are found in the third group, there is a differentiation in the conjugation of these verbs compared to verbs in the first two groups. In this context, we can say that the difficulty of learning conjugation in learners arises from the fact that the conjugation of verbs in French consists of three different groups and that the auxiliary verb and the past participle play a considerable role in this conjugation. Our study therefore focuses on the consequences of research devoted to the problems observed in the conjugation of the verbal predicate in the accounts of learners in preparatory French class at the Higher School of Foreign Languages of Uludağ University in Bursa. To do this, as P. Corder (1967) suggests, we will first identify the types of errors and then determine whether the errors made are errors of interlingual or intralingual origin. From the data obtained, it seems that the errors committed generally originate from the impact of intralingual errors, which leads us to carry out this study on intralingual errors at the level of French conjugation. Finally, we are going to make some suggestions about learning, at least, the conjugation of verbs in French.
