THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PATIENT ACTIVATION AND TREATMENT ADAPTATION IN PATIENTS DIAGNOSED AS DIABETIC

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between patient activeness and adherence to the treatment of diabetes in patients diagnosed as diabetic. Material and Method: The research was conducted with patients who applied to the OMU Faculty of Medicine Hospital Diabetes Training Clinic from July to September 2021. The sample of the study consisted of 290 people – 155 men and 135 women – who applied to the OMU Diabetes Training Clinic. Forms, the Patient Activation Measure – PAM – the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale – MMAS – were used as data collection tools. The SPSS program was used to assess the data collected. T-Test test, ANOVA Test, Mann-Whitney U-Test, Kruskall-Wallis Chi-Square Test and Spearman’s Rank Correlation were used in the analysis of the data. Results: The ages of the vast majority of the patients that participated in the study range from 40 to 49. 53.4 percent of the patients were male while 81.4 percent of them reported that they were married; 64.9 percent did not work; 81.4 percent were informed about diabetes. The mean of the scores of the patients from the Patient Activation Measure forms were found to be 42.7 ± 9.34. The mean of the scores of patients' adherence to the treatment were found to be 6.28 ± 1.43, which is the moderate level of adherence to the treatment). Having considered the scores of the study, Spearman's rank correlation was calculated using the patients’ activeness level and compliance with diabetes treatment and the p result was 0.502. Also, it was found that there was a correlation of 50.2 percent between the scales’ scores. According to the results of the research, as the education level of the patients increases, their income, activeness, and compliance with the treatment rise. The factor that most positively affected the patients’ activeness level was their level of education. Conclusion: As patients’ active involvement in the treatment increases, scores of compliance with the treatment increase. Furthermore, the scores of perceptions of good health rise as the level of education increases.
