Transmission of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) in Cats and Dogs

Staphylococcal infections are increasingly widespread worldwide in humans and animals. Staphylococci, which are members of normal skin flora, can cause various infections as opportunistic pathogens. The isolates identified as Staphylococcus intermedius in phenotypic character; S. intermedius group (SIG) is composed of three different species including S. intermedius, S. pseudintermedius and S. delphini. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, a relatively new species, is frequently isolated from cats and dogs. Recently, methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) has emerged worldwide and has been reported increasingly. Multiple antibiotic resistance, one of the public health problems, has made necessary to use new generation antibiotics and combinations. Today, antibiotic resistance of microorganisms causes nosocomial and public health related infections. Methicillin resistant staphylococci strains have played an important role in the emergence of these infections for a long time and cause many patients to die. The increasing use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine plays an important role in the spread of antibiotic resistance. Recent studies about the carriage of MRSP in humans and animals showed that increase of MRSP isolation and related to high rate of bacterial transmission to pet owners. The failure in applied treatments indicates that increased of resistance mechanism against cefoxitin and oxacillin antibiotics which representing methicillin resistance.
